As these services caught on hotmail took the lead because of performance and that great name. For the curious, hotmail was derived from html mail which was the original name of hotmail. At any rate - both had technical problems but net@ddress (usa.net) was not able to keep up with the growth and their web site was often slowed to a crawl at best. A few years later things have changed. I have always been a fan of net@ddress and I am happy to see that they are now a high performance mail provider which is focused on providing mail services for the commercial user. They still offer free accounts to individuals and if you use free email net@ddress is a better performer than hotmail. Hotmail has been a target of hackers and has been compromised many times yet net@ddress has been rock solid. They also offer additional free services to AMEX card holders like free pop accounts and forwarding services. If you formally used net@ddress take another look at it - you will be impressed. http://www.netaddress.com ______ software ___________________________________________ * Notespad http://www.theMezz.com/software/ click on NOTESPAD Notespad is a replacement for notepad - yeah I know, lots of them are out there, but this takes the cake. Personally I like http://www.google.com/, Yahoo and Goggle are great for searching, but about.com has a certain coolness about it. I use about.com to explore the net as opposed to searching the net. Hit it and see what I mean! ______ browser add on _____________________________________ I cannot take credit for this find it was given to us by one of the guys at THE INFORMANT ( http://theMezz.com/informant ) DICTIONARY LOOKUP BUTTON. Neat. ______ today in history in 1988 ___________________________ 1988 Prodigy launched IBM and Sears rolled out their joint venture, Prodigy, to paying customers in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Hartford. The business, dubbed a "videotext" service, cost $9.95 per month and gave users the ability to shop, trade stocks, bank, and book airline tickets. Sears and IBM launched the venture in 1984, investing an estimated $250 million in the service. Newspaper companies like Knight-Ridder and Times Mirror had also launched so-called videotext services in the mid-1980s but shut them down in 1986 due to a lack of consumer demand. At the time, videotext services such as The Source (a precursor to AOL), CompuServe, Dow Jones News Retrieval, and Genie from GE, had attracted fewer than two million subscribers. The service did not debut nationally until the fall of 1990. Jump over to http://theMezz.com/bbs and post your suggestions!
