Colin,
I myself haven't tried it, but one of my venders switched from
Smartcam to Mastercam. He uses it for everything in his shop. VMC's, Wire
EDM, Graphite Milling Machine; both 2 axis and 3D mold work. He reviewed
all of his CAM options like many of us are doing, and felt that Mastercam
was the best option to replace Smartcam. I would say that in my area
(Chicago and it's suburbs), Mastercam seems to be pretty widespread
(Smartcam too, but it's losing ground as others switch).
In my mind's eye, depending on what you do, the main alternatives are
Mastercam, Edgecam, Esprit, Surfcam, and Gibbs (maybe GenMac MS8?). I also
recall a post some while ago about a product called PEPS which is supposed
to have a robust macro language and customizable post processors.
Hope this helps a little...

Chris
