Mastercam is a robust system and a general CAD/CAM system. It offers a wide variety of geometric construction methods, a powerful surface modeler and a simplified solid modeler. Its a nice system for all your 2 and 3 axis machining. 2 axis milling is parametric and although powerful, its sometimes less desirable to work with. The post is easy to work with and extremely powerful.
Many dealers and users may disagree with me, but I wouldn't recommend it as a system of choose when working with more then 3 axis. Support is available in these areas however they are offered as limited functions within the software, as 3rd party utilities or complex customized post. For example, if you're working with a rotary axis, titling rotary table, a combination tombstone/rotary table or titling head with a rotary table then I would necessary place Mastercam at the top. Its very weak in these areas. Also if working with special form tools, Mastercam is weak in this area as well. See http://www.gocadcam.com/chal_2.html When selecting a CAD/CAM system over another, you have to carefully analyze many different factors. Just because its popular doesn't mean its right for you and your company.
