John,
You will need to draw your threading tool in a .sh3 file and associate that
file
with the tool you are using. This will work for Show Path and Show Cut, but
the
thread form displayed in the graphic view (wireframe) will always be a sharp
V.
If you did a typical install, there should be sample .sh3 files installed in
your Turn\Tctg folder.
The SmartCAM Production Turning Users Guide starting on page 111 has more
details. An
item they neglect to mention is that the tool "must" be drawn on the
XY_PLANE. People tend
to forget that the default plane in turning is the ZX_PLANE. You will need
to change both your
active plane and your view orientation for the XY_PLANE. The active plane is
set in the insert
bar. The view can be set with the Dynamic View function by selecting the
XY_PLANE as the
Workplane.
The following is an excerpt from the SmartCAM Production Turning Users Guide
page 113.
Creating a CTG for Show Cut
You can make your own custom tool graphics for Show Cut by creating a file
that contains a profile
of the tool's perimeter.
1. Use File-New to start a new model.
2. To create the cutting portion of the tool, make the following settings in
the Insert property bar:
* Set the Layer/Step selector switch to On Layer and enter 1 in the
Layer/Step indicator field.
* Set the Sequence Type selector switch to Profile, and enter 1 in the
Insert Location
indicator field.
SmartCAM requires that the Show Cut CTG profile is the first profile
on layer 1.
* Enter zero in the Profile Top indicator field.
* Create a closed profile of the tool perimeter using basic elements
such as lines and arcs.
For a turning tool, create the geometry as shown in figure 6-13. For
most turning tools,
place the nose radius center point at X0, Y0.
For turning hole tools, define the tool and holder geometry as shown
in figure 6-14. Place
the tool tip on the origin point (X0, Y0, Z0).
If you want to include the insert holder as part of the cutting tool,
it must be included as part
of the tool perimeter's closed profile.
All elements of the Show Cut profile must be in a continuous sequence
with no gaps.
3. Use File-Save As to save the Show Cut CTG as a 3-D (.sh3) file in the
custom tool graphics
directory.
Make sure that you save your file to the same directory as all other CTG
files. The pturn.ini
file includes a reference for the directory containing the CTG files. If
you change the directory
name or location, you must update the pturn.ini file to match the
changes.
