Using Dell as an example, through the years, they have always scored near the top of magazine tests against competitors' boxes, specifically the winstone marks. I assume they achieve and maintain this by doing exhaustive testing of different combinations of components. If one were to build one's own box, how do you know your particular configuration will perform well? Or is this less of an issue than one might think, especially in light of the multitude of magazines doing these tests? As to costs, it'll definitely be cheaper to buy the Dell box. A great performing configuration for a great price. I was just wondering if added cost of building it yourself was justified by the advantages of doing so. I'm now thinking of doing a combination of the two. I think I can save some money off of the Dell box by performing some of the desired upgrades myself. For instance, to go from 128 to 256 megs of ram through Dell would cost an additional $130. My brother can get me 128 SDRAM 133 for $80. To delete the modem from Dell saves $90, my brother can get me a 3Com V.90 56K modem for $48, a savings of $42. These (2) changes alone save $92. Please continue to share any further insights.
