DO NOT DO IT!!! Stay with NT if at all possible, 98 if not. We have had nothing but trouble with XP and SmartCam. Most of the other applications work fine; XP has a compatibility mode' setting that lets you launch specific programs in various "windows modes"; we have tried SmartCam in all of the various modes... 95, 98, NT, 256 colour, etc., but to no avail. Dell says "it shouldn't do that if it works with NT." Micro$oft says "That'll be $295 if you want us to listen to your problem". What's happening is this: SmartCam will hang (Lockup, freeze, whatever) when doing the following: 1) "Keep Defaults" will cause SmartCam to stop responding to the mouse... the arrow is still visible, but will not allow anything to be selected... buttons, icons, menus... nothing responds to the mouse. However, the keyboard shortcuts (Alt + F for 'File') still work fine. When this happens, the file is saved without asking if you want to save or overwrite!!!! 2) Opening a new file will cause the same thing to happen about 80% of the time. To work on a new file, we've found it best to exit SmartCam, and then launch it again before opening a new file. 3) Surface machining will just cause a major crash and burn about 50% of the time. 4) At seemingly random times, changes are saved without asking if you want to save or overwrite!!!! Case in point -- I opened a file and extended 2 lines to find a theoretical intersection point on a contour, then exited SmartCam. It never asked if I wanted to save the changes, it just went ahead and exited. I opened the file later that day, and it had the 2 lines extended! The auto-saving "feature" (bug?) is only occurring in SmartCam; no other applications are doing this. The same installation had worked fine for a year on 2 NT stations with no problems of any kind. We are getting ready to switch back to NT, but Dell tells us that will void the warranty on both machines. But I digress... Venting about Dell is not a subject for this group :) Greg Hyman Mauch Labs ====================================================================== To find out more about this mailing list including how to unsubscribe, send the message "info mfg-smartcam" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ====================================================================== ====================================================================== To find out more about this mailing list including how to unsubscribe, send the message "info mfg-smartcam" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ======================================================================
