Chris,

I'm sharing this reply with the group because some others may benefit from
it.

I know the default setup locations for the configuration files are different
for NT and '95 installations.

I'm not an "IT" guy, so I will explain this as best as I can based on my
observations. Any NT gurus out there, please feel free to enlighten us.

The default location of the config files for Windows 3.1 & Windows 95 is
"C:\Sm9cfg\Home\". This is a common folder where all the application ini
files were to be stored.

The default location of the config files for Windows NT is the "home"
directory of the logged on user. This is typically the root of your boot
drive "C:\" but could be a mapped network drive. If a mapped drive is used,
the same drive letter is assigned to all users, but each is mapped to a
unique location on the server. This will allow each user to have their own
configuration setting to be used in SmartCAM.

For example, I know on our systems the "Home" directory is "H:\". Not being
an IT guy I don't know how to check this other than going to the command
prompt. Whenever I open the command prompt I find my self at the "H:\>"
prompt. Every one of our users "H" drives are mapped to their own personal
folders on the server.

When I install SmartCAM on WinNT or 200K the default for the configuration
files is always "H:\Home\". I always override the default config path and
use the old Win95 path of "C:\Sm9cfg\Home\" so all users use common config
settings on the local workstation. That's just my preference. To do this I
always select the custom install when running setup and specify the desired
paths.

To find your current config path, open your SmartCAM.ini file and find the
"CFGPath" in the "Defaults" section.

[Defaults]
CFGPath=C:\Sm9CFG\HOME

Check if this is to a local or network location.

P.S. Deleting your JOSDEF folder may not have helped. When SmartCAM does a
re-install, it does not always reinstall files that may have been
customized. I don't have a list of which files are ignored, I do know that
setup does not always overwrite I file I have corrupted (backup, backup,
backup). To force a full reinstall you may try deleting or renaming your
SmartCAM.ini file prior to running setup.

Fred,
I haven't had time to follow your advice as of yet, but more info has come
in from the guys in the shop. They tell me SmartCam does work if they sign
on with a different screen name. We run Win NT 4.0, and do not have
administrative rights to our computers. It has been my experience that you
don't need administrative rights to install SmartCam (something about 16 bit
programs vs. 32 bit programs?). Apparently SmartCam has been corrupted as it
relates to the setup of the screen name that was active when we experienced
the brown out, but the rest of the software on this computer works fine for
this screen name.
I am not savvy enough to troubleshoot this problem, and our IT guys know
nothing about setting up SmartCam. I've always done it myself.
Do you have any more ideas in light of this new information?
Thanks for your time.

Chris

Chris,

First check in the "Planner" section of your application ini (i.e. ffm.ini)
file for the path to the "StepListFormatFile".

[Planner]
StepListFormatFile=C:\Sm9\mill\josdef\MSTEPLST.FMT

Then make sure the file in that path exists.

If it does, it may have been corrupted. There is usually a backup file
"MSTEPLST.OLD" that you can copy and then change the "OLD" extension to
"FMT".

Otherwise I have attached a copy of my default step list format file you can
try.

NOTE: You may encounter additional error messages after you address this
one, depends on the condition of the other support files.

Hi all,
We had a brown out here at work, and since then SmartCam will not run on one
of our pc's. Everything else on this pc works fine. When I try to start
SmartCam, I get the following error:

10010: The Step List Format File has a fatal error in it. Cannot continue.

I backed up my smartcam.ini & pmill.ini files and tried re-installing the
software, to no avail. I then deleted the Josdef folder, tried re-installing
the software again, and still had no success.

Any ideas?
