Jeff, You have your icon size set to "Medium" which scales your 32 X 32 icon to 24 X 24. You are correct in that your icon is too cluttered. The fine details are blurred when scaled. This is most noticeable at 24 X 24 because it's not evenly divided into 32 like 16 is for "Small" icons.
If this is the desired display setting I suggest modeling the icons at the 24 X 24 resolution then scaling them up to 32 X 32.
