We were using shielded cable for communicating with
a manual switch box.

Then a few years back when we upgraded our floor PC
server we went with an electronic switch box from Byteway.
To this box we are running fiber optic cables.
No pin connections required and no worries for
interference with optics.
We have a Bostomatic Mill, Hurco Mill and three
Agie wire machines hooked up to the box via optic
cabling with no problems.

Michael Senack

Louis,

Connect the shield at one end only to pin 1. It is an excellent way to
trap radio frequency noise.

Use a twisted, shielded pair for the pin 2-3 and pin 3-2 connections
(the data lines). This will also reduce interference

An RS-232C connection is only intended for use up to 50 feet. As you go
longer, the signals weaken. We have used RS-232C as long as 200 feet in
quiet locations, but that is really pushing it.

For runs up to 900 feet, use a line modem on each end ($60-$100? each).
That will cut out almost all interference.

Sources of interference are welding, electric motors, fluorescent lights

and EDM. Avoid them.

Don't plug a radio into the same outlet as the computer or the CNC
machine. It induces voltage drops and spikes on the AC line.

Put a good 8' copper ground into the ground at the CNC machine if you
can.
