Group-
I work wit both AutoCAD 2000 and SolidWorks and I would highly recommend
SolidWorks as an excellent CAD package. I have worked on AutoCAD for over
10 years and converted to SolidWorks last June. The advantage of SolidWorks
is tremendous; ease of use, making changes (either at the model level or
drawing level), making assemblies, etc and the learning curve was minimal.
Also, I ran into several problems with compatibility with AutoCAD and
Smartcam. SolidWorks was fairly simple and we received better results. We
have also found that sharing files with outside design firms resulted in
discovering the majority were using SolidWorks. One last note; if you are
concerned about the capabilities of complex parts when compared to a package
like SDRC, we found that there were very few items that SolidWorks could not
handle and that changes during design stage took considerably less time.
Hope this helps!

Subject: [mfg-smartcam] CAD/CAM PACKAGES

Group,
The information that was given on other CAM systems was very helpful and I
believe that this group has a very good knowledge base to go from and I
thank everyone for there input.
What about CAD software? We currently use AutoCAD2000 and we are also
looking to upgrade to AutoCAD Inventor or maybe go to Solid Works. I would
be interested to hear the groups ideas on drawing software like ease of
learning, compatibility with CAM systems etc.
Just a thought for more information from a fine group of people.
Thanks
Jeremy
