Sounds like he did a move or rotate function  with the copy button on, while in an different work plane.  I have found that if I am in a user defined plane, say E1, and I do a move to x- 1.0 of everything in that plane, then all the items move, but so does the origin of the E1 plane.  Just my two cents worth anyway.
