Not a direct answer, but I know Jay uses a 3945 with the ipw driver (and gentoo) with relatively few problems. I use a 4965 with the iwl drivers, which also support the 3945. IWL is the new driver branch which is merging into the kernel that uses the mac80211 layer. I have little to no troubles with the iwl drivers, but again with gentoo.
