I run Fedora 7 on my desktop PC and use Verizon DSL. My modem is a
Westell 6100-E90 modem/router.I have no other networking hardware. Once
every several days I lose my Internet connection (although I don't lose
DSL sync) . I try to restore my Internet connection by issuing "service
network restart" from a terminal. Eth0 gets closed down, but then the
command hangs. I'm only able to restore my Internet connection by
rebooting Fedora. This is frustrating because a reboot is inconvenient
and I believe a reboot should be a last resort.

I'd like to pinpoint where "service network restart" hangs. How can I do
this?

Two approaches come to mind:

1. Place hooks in the networking scripts that are invoked by "service
network restart". This approach is unappealing to me. I have no
experience with BASH scripting. (Although I could keep backups of the
original scripts.)

2. Issue "service network restart" with "strace" turned on. (I've never
used strace.)

Is there an easier and/or better approach?

In case anyone has an idea as to what is causing my connection loss,
following are some details about it:

Modem status: the DSL LED is solid green. The Internet and Ethernet
LED's are blinking green. I interpret this as meaning that I've not lost
sync, and that the modem is actually transmitting data to the Internet.
(I got the modem new from Verizon this past July.) I've tried
power-cycling the modem, waiting many minutes during power-down and
after power-up, and disconnecting/reconnecting the ethernet cable.

NIC LEDs: NIC is Intel Pro/100 M with two LEDs. The LEDs are both lit.
The 100Mb LED is solid green. The LINK/ACT LED is blinking green. The
status of these LEDs is the same as when I have an Internet connection.

GKrellm: The eth0 monitor shows zero activity. When I have an Internet
connection, the eth0 monitor shows continuous activity, even when I'm
not accessing anything.

KNetstats monitor: (analogous to the Gnome desktop applet). This shows
I'm disconnected. The icon has a red circle containing a white "X".
.
ifconfig: eth0 UP, BROADCAST, and MULTICAST, but *not* RUNNING. IP
address 192.168.1.150. (Ifconfig issued after connection loss but before
"service network restart").

ethtool eth0: link detected: yes (Ethtool issued after connection loss
but before "service network restart").

ping 192.168.1.150 OK (Ping issued after connection loss but
before
"service network restart")

ping 192.168.1.1 Destination host unreachable. (Ping issued
after
connection loss but before "service network restart")

I'm running with my IP address statically assigned 192.168.1.150,
instead of using the DHCP server on the modem/router.

There is no useful information in /var/log/messages or from dmesg.

The connection loss always seems to happen approximately two hours after
powering-on the PC. It has never occurred a second time on any
particular day.
