My problem isn't playing the DVD's in linux, I just want to convert
them to .avi to save hard drive space and be able to stream them to my
Xbox 360.  The tools I've been messing around with so far seem to
prefer I point them to a DVD device, or an .iso or other image file.

Unless I'm misreading you and you're saying the mplayer and lsdvd can
do conversions from a dvd directory structure?
