I am helping a friend migrate from Windows to Linux. His old Dell's
original Windows XP install became unusable from the craware and from
several viruses runnin gon it. It's actually pretty funny to see the
viruses kill the anti-virus before it has a chance to open its update
dialog.

I installed Ubuntu Linux on his machine (and increased the RAM for good
measure). He's happy with it, with one notable exception; the sound card
is a PCI Creative Sound Blaster 24 Live, which obstinately refuses to work
with Linux (Ubuntu 9.04 will reportedly fix the problem). This means that
the kids reboot in Windows to watch their Flash web sites, a clearly
unsatisfactory solution.

So I am looking for a recommendation for a decent PCI sound card that is
supported by Linux. Any brand/model you had success with?

Note: When I built a Linux home machine, I went with an el-cheapo StarTech
PCISOUND4 card, $11 at Newegg, which worked fine. I ordered another one
for this friend and it was defective, apparently a common occurrence for
this model. Comment posters on Newegg say a huge proportion of these cards
are either dead on arrival, defective or noise-ridden. I would not
recommend it.
