I believe *everything* for mozilla is stored in $HOME/.mozilla or
$HOME/.mozilla-thunderbird (depending on version). Saving off that
directory will effectively backup your entire mail environment
(including all settings).
If you want to find the individual mail files, they are down in there
somewhere, but my recommendation would be to just back up the entire
directory.

This thing is totally disjoint on the surface. All of the mail is
accessible from the inbox window. I can scroll and select, display,
print but can not find that mass of mail anywhere in the file system. I
did clean up a lot of stuff in the burt/tmp directory early on but that
has had no discernible effect on the mass of mail. I can scroll the list
and display, print etc but I see no means to transfer or copy any or all
of it to a file or directory. There is no evidence of mail in any of the
files that I can get to as a user or as root. Clearly the system works
but it is unclear to me how it is doing it. TNX Burt
