After the install of Ubuntu 8.10 before even the first reboot, a prompt comes up asking the user if they would like to port over their data from Windows, which I believe includes a directory tree of what is on the NTFS drive to allow choosing what directories to copy over.

The problem with all those Windows-to-Linux migration tools is they will *copy* all your data to your home directory, rather than linking to it in place. I suppose that would be important if you had a multi-user system where you needed to keep the data from individual Windows users separated from others, but when it's just you on the machine (or if you share common document & media space), not so good.

I have my system set up with a large NTFS partrtion with XP and all my documents, mail files, downloads, etc. I set up symlinks in mt Linux home dir to the corresponding locations on the NTFS-3G mount. For my Thunderbird profile, I have the "Mail" & "ImapMail" directories in ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/<profile> pointing to those dirs on the Windows side. That way it's working with the same saved mail, etc.
