You will ALWAYS be in this situation. The only way to do updates outside of your vendor is to hack firmware NOT designed for your phone in. See my previous comments about the dangers of root, and that you have no idea what that hacked firmware might be doing under the covers. Android is a surprisingly open phone dev - but it is NOT linux as you know it.
