And note that it was "The official Verizon OTA package".  It came from
your vendor, even if you got it a little bit before your vendor provided
an auto update.

2.1 existed for 3 months before such a package was created for the
droid.  You as an end user CAN NOT make that package.  You will only get
it once your vendor has made it for you.

Mobile is not general purpose space.  Keep saying that until it sinks in. :)

If you really want to be able to directly update your phone software at
will, you need to get one of the ADP phones, which are specifically
designed for firmware development:

Other than that, you will be at the mercy of your handset manufacturer
and your carrier for getting phone updates.
