MHVLUG is proud to announce our September 2010 meeting:
.... BOINCThe Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open source software platform which supports volunteer computing projects such as s...@home, einst...@home, and Climatepredition.net, and can also be used for desktop grid computing within an organization. The BOINC client software, which runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, allows you to contribute your spare computing power to various projects doing scientific research. You can participate in a single project or choose any combination you like. Eric will present a general overview of BOINC, along with a brief description of some of the most popular BOINC projects. He will explain how to install and configure BOINC on Linux, either using package managers or from source code, and will demonstrate how to control the BOINC client (the daemon) using the BOINC Manager (the GUI). If time permits and there is interest there will also be an outline of the process of setting up a BOINC project on a Linux server. Eric Myers is a physicist who worked on the initial launch of einst...@home [1], and who has contributed code and documentation to BOINC. .... Lightning Talks * Report from Linuxcon - Sean * Report from Debconf - Chris Before the main talk we will do a series of lightning talks (up to 3), each 10 minutes or less, on something Open Source related. It could be a fun new program, a book, a blog post, or really anything you think the wider MHVLUG community would find some interest in. People that have posted their talk subject to the website in advance have priority. Time permitting, we'll also take impromptu lightning talks from the floor. If you are planning on using the projector for your lightning talk, please arrive at 5:30 to ensure we can work out any kinks with the projector prior to the meeting. The meeting will take place at Mid Hudson Library System Auditorium on Wednesday, September 1st at 6 pm. All meetings are *free* and open to the public, and everyone from all levels of expertise and interest in Linux and Open Source Software are encouraged to attend (and bring a friend or two)! After each meeting ends everyone is welcome to join in on an informal dinner gathering at the Palace Diner [2] on Washington St. This is a great opportunity to interact with members of the local Linux community, and a forum where questions and comments are strongly welcomed. For more details, including maps and directions, please see http://mhvlug.org [3]. [1] http://www.einsteinathome.org/ [2] http://mhvlug.org/content/palace-diner [3] http://mhvlug.org
