The way it works on my phone [LG-VN50] is that contacts are directly in the 
phone's memory, but can be copied to or imported from a microSD card, and any 
information on the microSD card can be copied/imported with a computer via USB 
or bluetooth.  [Including a computer running Linux.]

Some other non-smart phones I've recently seen seem to work this same way.
