@ Sean. I think Chris was talking about hard drive SSDs.  I have bought
several Intel x25 drives and they beat the pants off of a normal platter
drive and require almost no energy and radiate very little heat.  You can
find 40 gig Intel SSDs at around $100, newegg is currently out of stock but
you can get the 80 gig for $200.  Cheap USB SSDs are often slow (you can
find some fast 4 usb) but they are USB so that's a bottleneck in of its
self.
