10.10 slowing down.

It is my impression that 10.10 is a cutting edge release that
sometimes updates with less than perfected things.

It is also my impression that 10.04.1 LTS is more designed for a guy
who just needs the computer to work and they are a little more
cautious in what goes into it.

Be sure that you have all of the updates for 10.10. They might have
put out a bug fix when a problem started showing up in multiple
places.

But if all you want is a productive desktop, you might want to
consider 10.04.1 LTS. This edition assumes that you have a better
screen resolution than 1024/768. If that is what you have, you might
want to install 9.10 and then upgrade it, or possibly Xubuntu,
something that I have never used. If your install gets you sound but
no video, then it's probably because it's default setting is higher
than what your video card can really deliver. It most likely can be
changed in command line but I could not tell you how.

Most people at some point settle into one distro, simply because all
of the distros have their little idiosyncrasies and using one distro
means that you will only need one set of "tricks of the trade." That
is why I took XP out of my system. Two platforms mean twice as much
work and you have four! I also took Kubuntu out, for all of it's
bells and whistles, because I was spending more time configuring than
getting things done.

If you decide to go the simple route, you might want to "Kill Disk", a
free download, your hard drive (AFTER YOU HAVE BACKED UP YOUR
DATA!!!!!) before you start. I have had problems putting a distro
over a distro on a partition previously used for LInux because
reformatting a disk does not delete every little line of code, it just
deletes the system's ability to address. it.

KIll disk writes zeros on every space on your hard drive giving you a
true fresh start. (Reformatting you hard drive does not delete
classified documents and the police have a program that can find
"Kiddy Porn" on a reformatted hard drive.

If Windows is on one of the partitions, make sure that your Windows
restore CD's aren't scratched as well. Mine are.

I only use Ubuntu with Gnome and can do everything except play some
Windows CD's (Wine only works well with low graphics applications.)
That is because I need a computer that boots right up and gets me
online and printing out, without a lot of hastle.
