Years ago I visited senior citizens for New York City getting home care under
Medicaid. When they start to slip one of the first skills to go is to think to
call someone on the phone and the ability to dial a telephone. We used boxes
like the ones that are on TV (I've fallen and I can't get up!!)

They are appropriate for a few people but when they get to that point they
shouldn't be living alone. Either a home care attendant or a nursing home.

Even having a cell phone strapped to their waist won't help if they don't think
to use it, or can't dial it.

We got my wife's grandmother a T-moble pay as you go phone for about $30

at Target. I can put $10 on it to give her 30 min of call time, either

via credit card over her phone (she brings it to family gatherings when

it runs out) or via the web on my own. She carries it everywhere but

never uses it unless the minutes are about to expire.

At first the minutes ran out after 90 days, but now that she's been using

it for so long they make it 1 year from last purchase. So as insurance

goes this is pretty cheap. My biggest concern is whether she'll remember

how to use it if it's really needed, but I think we are okay there.

Having her use up the minutes every 90 days was not bad practice.
