I wanted to combine mic audio with the APRS bursts, so I conjured up a no-doubt excessively complex interface that worked with our ICOM HTs: http://softsolder.com/2010/06/17/gps-audio-interface-for-icom-z-1a-ht/ Alas, that does *not* work with the Wouxun (which uses the Kenwood HT interface), so I chopped up & rewired a circuit board to behave that way. The ICOM battery pack / power adapter, of course, doesn't fit the Wouxun, so I must build another one; the 3D printer will help a lot. Right now the whole mess is bungied to the side of the radio pack. The trouble with doing audio + data is that either you're chatting on the APRS frequency *or* you're hosing down a voice frequency with APRS data. The local APRS gurus OKed our low-volume / low-power tactical comm, but talking more than that would be a Bad Thing for data throughput. You do *not* want to send data bursts through the repeaters. If you just want to send APRS data squirts on the APRS frequency, then you just wire the APRS board (Byonics TT3, etc) more or less directly to the HT's mic & PTT inputs. It has enough options & settings to work with nearly anything. The Galactic APRS database available through aprs.fi does all the logging & tracking & stalking I need for my simple purposes. Their by-date interface is, mmm, awkward, but that's in the nature of fine tuning.
