I think age is the biggest factor, as working with the farm project google is pretty much assumed as the standard. The leadership team there is more or less my age, and those decisions where made before I started volunteering there.

You also need to make it clear that only the publishers of events need accounts on many of these services, as the output is publicly readable. That typically gets you down to 6 - 10 people that need accounts, so the sell isn't so bad. That's true of anything you are going to use, be it a commercially hosted service, or your own install cms.
