The diaspora team, who are building an open source social network, now have working code out there, as well as a canonical instance of it at http://joindiaspora.com. They've done some good stuff, including easy posting from diaspora to both facebook and twitter.

If you are interested, let me know. I think it's still an invite model.

One can also register to get an invitation, though if Sean is already on then an invite through him might arrive sooner.

It seems Diaspora involves a collection of servers, called 'pods', and the pods exchange the information with other pods. You join a pod that you feel you can trust with your personal information. Or you can set one up yourself, with Apache+Ruby+MySQL (or Nginx instead of Apache).

So perhaps just for a test, an MHVLUG pod would be in order, if Sean or someone else is going to play with the code anyway. And those not interested in the setup details could play with the interface on that pod even if invites from the main pod are not yet forthcoming.

It seems that one could even have several personae in Diaspora, one via a club pod, another via work or school. I wonder how that would work? (Perhaps not unlike using Facebook for family social sharing and Google+ for tech/work stuff, which is kinda how I'm doing things now.)
