hate to see Linux becoming like Windows, in that you need to upgrade to all new
latest and greatest hardware for each OS release. There must be some happy
medium between being able to use older hardware and having all the latest
W7-like kewl features in order to attract Windoze users.
I wouldn't call it a major objective, though it's been true for a while.
Basically the solution for older hardware is xfce4. It's a little bit
like old gnome, doesn't have any effects that would require 3D. That's
what I install on all my servers that are going to be basically accessed
over NX.
I personally like Unity a lot on my laptop, but it works pretty poorly
for a remote desktop environment.
