My secondary PC is a year 2000 Dell Dimension 4100: Celeron 733 MhZ, 512 MB RAM, GeForce FX5200 graphics card. It is multiboot, running Fedora 14 with KDE, Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity, and Windows XP Pro. Fedora 14 with KDE runs fine. I was unable to upgrade to F15 or F16. I now do my Fedora upgrades using "preupgrade" and the minimum RAM requirement for F15 and F16 is 640 MB. When F15 was released, the developers of the Fedora installer (Anaconda) had stated they were planning to reduce the minimum RAM requirement for F16. This didn't happen. There is some indication it may happen with F17. Ubuntu 11.10 introduced support for Unity on PCs that don't have 3D graphics acceleration. Unity is running so-so on my Dimension 4100. Some basic functions like switching virtual desktops often just doesn't work for me. With Ubuntu 11.04, PC's lacking 3D graphics acceleration were forced to Gnome. This ran great on my Dimension 4100. _______________________________________________ Mid-Hudson Valley Linux Users Group http://mhvlug.org http://mhvlug.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mhvlug Upcoming Meetings (6pm - 8pm) MHVLS Auditorium Dec 7 - An Intro to Chef Jan 4 - Recovering the Brownfield: Revitalizing Open Source Projects Feb 1 - Home Networking Made Simple with Amahi Home Server
