I'm going to suggest Python and especially the book "Python Programming, Third Edition, for the Absolute Beginner"
I do like what I see from the table of contents. It's a nice progression of programming concepts, from variables and loops and functions to objects and GUI and Graphics and sound. Thanks for the pointer.
What this book uses also brings up another generally good idea. Games are a great way to get started with programming. Games have rules to be followed, and algorithms to be implemented to make the game progress. So for a beginner (in any language) creating a game -- either implementing an existing game or creating a new one -- is a good programming project.
