Thank you very much, Matthias, for your prompt and comprehensive reply!

I have a m-audio 1010lt which is "ok" as an analog to digital converter. I also have a native instruments audio 4dj but neither of these are $40. You could probably just use any old sound card if ripping lossfully, maybe not an onboard as I have experienced them making digital noise.

Would you (or anyone here) have any specific recommendations on decent sound cards (PCIe or USB) in the $40-80 range, new or used? I don't need features, just pretty good A/D conversion -- and of course it MUST work with Linux! ;-)

This is the part that gets "crazy" but all im after is one good rip and the vinyl goes to the trash afterwards.

I'm with you on the "one good rip, then trash" for most of them.

I get a dishwashing bin and fill it with warm water and dawn dish detergent, not too much soap just normal dish washing amount. The water I fill to the bottom of the record label when the record stands perpendicular to the bottom of the bin. I rotate the record and gently clean it with a new sponge or soft cloth. I actually leave the record wet and slightly soapy and put it on a spare 1200 technic turntable and spray with more water so the needle floats over some of the crackle.

Thanks for being so specific! It sounds worth trying on one side to start with, to see whether I can notice the difference. I suspect I'll be digitizing more cassettes than vinyl, but I'm still winnowing both.

I rip as flac then make mp3 from that if needed using audacity.

Makes sense - storage is cheap enough to save both lossless and compressed versions of each track. What program do you (anyone) prefer for ripping? And what about programs for digital signal processing afterward?

Thanks again!

Adam
