What are some of your views?

This is a big off topic for this list, would have been more of a dinner or lunch conversation. Come on out, we're not that scary. :)

That being said, everything O'Connor said was good advice, including his rant. A couple of additional things to think about:

Local resource wise we've got a Drupal Users Group [1] running, which, if it is something you get excited about, has plenty of employment opportunities. I've turned down 3 unsolicited offers in the last year (I have a job I quite like already) based on the work I do in the community and for the Poughkeepsie Farm Project [2].

There are also the Android Development Days [3] being run by Squidwrench [4]. Not web dev per say, but another local resource of a group that is working on a project together. It will help you figure out if that kind of thing is interesting to you.

There are also all number of other technology related user groups in our area [5]. If you aren't taking advantage of them as a way to expose yourself to new things, new interests that you might really like, you are missing out.

Lastly, regardless of what you do, doing it in the open, contributing back to open source, will serve you well. What open source networking tools have you contributed back to? Have a nagios plugin you've posted to their addon repo? Step 1 in interviewing someone in the 21st century is Google [6].
