KDE also has a package called nofat kde or something like that which

The problem isn't just with the processor; the GPU has become a critical element in recent distros as well. I have a re-purposed server here, dual-cores 64bit, 4G memory, but since it was once a server, the on-board video was all of 16M video memory. The best I could do for bumping up the display was an old 32M PCI card, and since no one makes a x8 PCIx video card (that's what it has for PCIx slots), not much chance of improving the video. So whatever distro/desktop I install has to take into account that it probably can't handle a full-fledged compiz/mutter environment.
