Hi all, Ben mentioned this in the Multicore Processing Thread, but I wanted to post a separate message for this. This is free & open to the public and may be of interest to many here.
* * * **Speaker: Dr. Michael Hind Affiliation : IBM Corporation, Programming Technologies Department Presentation Title : "Changing the Foundation: The Impact of Multicore Architectures on Software" Place : Coykendall Science Building (CSB) Auditorium Date and Time: Thursday, February 14, 2013, starting at 4:30 PM* *Note: Reception at CSB Lobby (coffee and cookies) starts at 4:00 PM* * * *Abstract*: Computer venders have introduced two dramatic changes in their architectures. First, the increase in clock frequency we have experienced over the past decades is no longer present. Second, there is an exponentially increasing number of processor cores on a chip. These changes present two unprecedented challenges to the software stack. Namely, how does the software 1) deal with the stagnation of single-threaded performance, and 2) utilize the additional capabilities provided by multiple cores on a chip? In this talk, I will present these issues and argue why these challenges present great opportunities for software optimization and suggest some approaches to address these fundamental problems.
