I'm running it in a VM on top of Windows, and I wanted to look into an alternative distribution that wasn't DEB or RPM based. So far, I like it. It isn't as easy to install as others -- there's no graphical installer and there are more manual steps than most. The Pacman tool takes a bit of getting used to as it has command line switches that are different. But other than those minor quirks, I like it. I'm working with someone else that uses Arch as his main distribution, and he also likes it but says "I wouldn't want to use it to run a server", because it seems to be dedicated to keeping the installation "at the bleeding edge", which is mostly good but has a couple of downsides. > I recently switched to using Archlinux on my desktop as I've found > myself spending way too much time with Ubuntu creating specialized > compiles for PHP, MariaDB, and more. I find myself rebuilding custom packages on Debian too on occasion, although not PHP or MariaDB. Debian defaults to MySQL from Oracle but thankfully also has MariaDB. > In the end, I felt that if I was spending that much time anyway, I'd > rather use a distro that is more geared towards it. I haven't been compiling packages on Arch so I think you're probably at a more advanced stage with Arch than I am; however I do plan to look into that as well as how to do package building on Arch when I get a chance. -- Chris -- Chris Knadle [email protected] _______________________________________________ Mid-Hudson Valley Linux Users Group http://mhvlug.org https://mhvlug.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mhvlug Upcoming Meetings (6pm - 8pm) Vassar College May 7 - Personal 3D Printing Jun 4 - Samba: Can We All Just Get Along?
