Mid Hudson Valley Linux and Open Source Users Group Follow Us MHVLUG is proud to announce our November meeting: Modern DNS Is Cooler Than You Thought! Note: this meeting is in the Rocky 300 room, one floor up from our normal meeting location. If your idea of DNS is still a couple of text files being served up by bind on that old Linux box in the corner, this talk is for you! Actually, it can still work that way, but in this talk we’ll learn about the many improvements that have gone on in the DNS space over its 30 year history. We’ll go over what it does, why it’s important, and how the latest cutting edge DNS platforms are driving towards full-on uber-reliable Global Traffic Management systems. Oh yes, and we’ll go over how you can setup your very own bind on that old Linux box in the corner! Shannon has been working in internet infrastructure since 1996 when he started at Infinity Data Systems, one of the first local ISPs. Not coincidentally, this was his first year using Linux full time. He can find his way around the full backend stack but he’s focused on software development, and has created or contributed to many open source projects throughout the years. He’s previously worked for Internap and F5 Networks, and is currently Senior Software Architect at NSONE, the data driven DNS company. Before the main talk we will do a series of lightning talks (up to 3), each 10 minutes or less, on something Open Source related. It could be a fun new program, a book, a blog post, or really anything you think the wider MHVLUG community would find some interest in. People that have posted their talk subject to the website in advance have priority. Time permitting, we'll also take impromptu lightning talks from the floor. The meeting space opens up at 5pm for pre meeting general discussion, question asking, show and tell, and setup. All are welcome to join. If you are planning on using the projector for your lightning talk, please arrive at 5:30 to ensure we can work out any kinks with the projector prior to the meeting. The meeting will take place at Rockefeller Hall 300, Vassar College on Wednesday, November 5th at 6 pm. All meetings are free and open to the public, and everyone from all levels of expertise and interest in Linux and Open Source Software are encouraged to attend (and bring a friend or two)! After each meeting ends everyone is welcome to join in on an informal dinner gathering at the Palace Diner on Washington St. This is a great opportunity to interact with members of the local Linux community, and a forum where questions and comments are strongly welcomed.
