One option to combine them that doesn't involve a monthly charge is to
get a smartphone/PDA and run GPS software on it.

For example, I have a Palm Treo 755p (on Sprint), and the TomTom GPS
package for it.  It uses a bluetooth GPS receiver and the screen on
the Treo to display the map.
