After noticing my boost onset had gone from 1500rpm to 2300rpm and peak boost risen another 800rpm, I got curious and investigated. Unfortunately I found that my compressor blades were now (just barely) touching the housing. I haven't gone any further with the investigation, but I suspect I have bearing damage due to running a . 065" restrictor. I ran this for a couple of reasons- first because my ChinaCharger (cheap rebuilt eBay turbo) would leak oil without it. I was told this was due to my higher oil pressure (shimmed pump). I installed the restrictor and the oil leaking/burning stopped. Of course that turbo lasted about 200 miles before it literally shook apart - I attributed to lack of balancing. I just kept the restrictor in place with the new "used" turbo and I've put about 1k miles on it - boosting at every moment possible - w/o issue up until now. I plan to check the oil drain with the car idling to see just how much oil is flowing out of the turbo, then start taking it apart.
But my real point was to find out what the general consensus/ experience is on running restrictors with journal bearing turbos. Anybody? _______________________________________________ Miatapower mailing list [email protected] http://list.miatapower.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/miatapower
