Air is 78% nitrogen (N2), 20% oxygen (O2), 1% argon, less than 1% CO2,
and a bunch of trace stuff.

Of those components, the only one involved in combustion is oxygen.
Some of the nitrogen that came along for the ride gets converted into
the NOx pollution that makes for smog, but you don't get any energy out
of it (in fact it takes some away).  Argon is referred to as a "noble
gas" because it doesn't form chemical bonds.  CO2 is "already burnt",
and is not involved in your combustion chamber except as a waste
product.
