Hey guys, Well I found out that my rebuilt 1.6l engine is using roughly 1/2 quart of oil in a 600 mile drive. Found out this info when we drove up to the Gap this past weekend. Oil level was topped off before the trip and down then next morning. I now have just over 2000 miles on the engine. It reads 15 inches of vacuum at idle, 22 inches while the car is decelerating.
What I'm finding is a small puff of white smoke at start up, but no other smoking while driving. Also during a hard run the car behind me smelled burnt oil, but didn't see any smoke out the tailpipe. I have a new pcv valve (the turbo 323 one from FM) in the car. I'm also using a stock oil filter with 5w30 Castrol oil. There are also no visible leaks under the car. I noticed the oil pressure was down to just over 30 on the stock gauge on the ride home. At that time the oil temp was around 225. But when we drove through the rain, my oil temp dropped and the pressure came up. I'm going to do a leakdown test and compression test this weekend. I'm also going to pull the plugs to see what they look like. Any other quick checks? How does one check the seals on the turbo? I heard that if the seals were bad, then the intercooler pipes would have oil in them. I haven't had a chance to pull the pipes, on the list for Saturday. The FMII has about 40K miles on it. I talked to the engine builder this morning, and he wants me to call him back with my findings. He was telling me not to worry at this point, that it may not be serious. I asked about the rings not being seated and he said that if they weren't then they would seat themselves in time. Does this sound right? Thanks for any help, I was feeling deja vue from the '07 oil smoking/usage problems with my old engine. I was pretty bummed when I realized I was still having issues. Sorry this was long, but I wanted to give you all of the info I could think of.
