Most VW/Audi engines from 94 and on utilize an electric operated air pump.
On a 1.8t its usually mounted under the intake manifold. You should see a
corrugated plastic hose running from the pump to the air cleaner housing. All
1.8t engines are prone to torn vac and intercooler hoses.

I worked on a new VW Jetta the other day and at a cold start, you would hear
the air pump activate for about 10 seconds. I swear that pump was so loud
and high pitched, it literally sounded like a twin screw supercharger at full
bore but without the engine noise to match!

I don't know why, but the Germans do like to put vac pumps on to boost the
signal to the brake booster. They failed back when I still worked on Audis,
guess nothing has changed. Back then we would just bypass them and the cars
stopped just fine on the engine vacuum.

I'd like to see the pump and be told why it has a vacuum pump on a
non-diesel.

Now if it was an air pump for emissions control purposes that's different.

Turbo Beetle, but not diesel (1.8T).

I have no idea why it has vacuum pumps except to make general comments about
the design of German cars. :)
