I'm not surprised.  The common issues with my '02 that I know Mazda won't do
anything about (on '01+ cars):

1.) Transmission "ringing" in 3rd-4th gear (poor tolerances IIRC)
2.) Poor tolerances on soft top latches
3.) Camshaft Position Sensor failures

I'm sure if I look around the car some, I'll recall more.  It's really kind of
sad.

Mazda
does not take complaints on the MSM very well. Unfortunately, they ignore most
of them. I have complained to Mazda Engineers several times about the MSM. They
basically knew several things are problems, but with limited production they
were not going to do anything about it. It does not hurt to try, but I would
not expect anything out of it.

That
said, some dealers are better than others. The one we use in San Antonio is
very friendly to aftermarket modifications.

Fuel pump failures on MSMs are a known problem, there probably is a
bulletin on it.

He needs to go higher up the food chain at the dealer, asking to
talk to the regional rep.  If that doesn't work, call the customer
complaint line in the owner's manual.

I got this on my local Miata list.  I told him to check
out Magnusson-Moss.  Do any of you have any tips I can give to this guy to
get the dealer to realize they're smoking crack?

Does anyone know of a good place to purchase an aftermarket fuel
pump.  Any ideas on which ones are good, and which ones to stay away from?

I'm asking this because my MSM started getting harder to start a
couple weeks ago, and then threw a code "lean at idle." last Friday.

I took it to King's Mazda, told them that I though it was the fuel
pump, and left it for them to look at.

They came back and said "Yes it's a defective fuel
pump,  but your aftermarket intake MAY have contributed to it, so it's not
covered under warrenty.  That will be $800 to replace."

They were pretty crappy about it too.

I'm never doing business there again.
