Adam,

I'm so sorry to hear about your car & your accident but glad you're OK. A
car is just a piece of machinery & can be replaced. Moreover, it sounds
like the structure did what it was supposed to do & kept you from being
harmed.

As an ER doc, I've always advocated padding the rollbar or even style bar.

Your experience is proof the padding kept you from serious harm.

Please post your story on Miata.net so others can learn from your experience
& pad their bars.

I'm also glad to hear you're in a decent mood about this adversity & plan on
rebuilding. Good luck to you!

Regards,
Sonny

If everything is coming your way,
  You're in the wrong lane!!!

I don't post here much, but some of you may recognize the car, or my
site, or something from Miatanet. I've recently been having a hard time
getting the ECU to register as "ready" so that I could pass emissions. I
done various drive cycles for the past 2000 miles. Well.... I don't have to
worry about that anymore.

I was driving on i-40 eastbound here in Albuquerque, 11/19/08.
Traffic stopped suddenly right past a hill and small turn. I stopped; it was
quick, but there was no drama. I put on my hazards. I was the last car in
line and no one was really behind me. I could see a truck crest the hill at
full speed with the next wave of traffic. I cringed. I prayed. I was hit at
full speed.

        sigh.

Not the best feeling getting hit at 70 mph. My head hit the padding
on my rollbar at full force. That rock-like SFI padding felt like a soft
pillow to my head. I didn't blow through it. I nudged the car ahead of me
and then snapped forward. I never got close to the steering wheel. I called
911 while in the car and then pulled off the road. I got out of the car and
fished my camera out of what was left of the trunk and verified that it
still worked (amazing).

I lost the next 10 minutes of my life. I was suddenly standing next
to my car and had shot 19 pix. I'd apparently talked to the cops and other
drivers. I went to the ER with a concussion. Sharka went to a salvage yard.
I think he's drivable, but they wouldn't let me drive due to the lack of
tail lights. I was probably also not in the best mental place ever to be
driving.

I'm feeling amazingly good today! My head is clear and I have no
pains. I went to the salvage and got the rest of my stuff out of Sharka's
trunk and surveyed the damage. The back end is gone. The passenger
compartment is untouched. The damage seems to stop right around where the
rear legs of the rollbar start. I think it helped keep the truck from coming
in further. Also, the padding. the padding saved me. If I'd hit the unpadded
bar, I'd either be dead or a vegetable. I'm a lucky guy.

So I'm gonna buy the car back from insurance. The adjuster hasn't
yet seen it, but after that happens, I'm clear to move the car back to my
garage. I'm 99.9% sure it'll be a total loss. The interior and new engine
are all untouched. The 4 wheels and 4 suspension zones also seem untouched.
I'm excited to harvest the parts and transplant into a new body. I plan to
start over with a 94-95 and never have to worry about OBDII ever again. =)
I've already noticed the nice low price that 94-95 Links go for...

        Pad your rollbars.
