I did this back in the day on my old se/30 mac (circa 1989). I used
a scsi to CF adapter and installed various OSes on it including System
6, System 7.x, BSD and Linux. Since the machine was so old I couldnt
measure any speed difference.

I am not sure you will get a huge speed bump and you may be limited by
the limited number of read writes that CF cards have (which isnt an
issue for cameras, but for OS use it may be). Some people use these
for embedded systems that will load mostly into memory. DIY wireless
routers use such technologies.

The big benefit would be no moving parts. If this computer will be
mounted in your car, it would be able to withstand shocks better.
