Semi cheap? Yes it will be compared to buying "real" hdd's or ssd's.
You will not likely see any speed increase as it is bus limited by the
IDE bus (ATA-33 most likely), and even more so by the read/write speed
of CF - significantly slower than "real" drives. Most CF cards write at
a maximum 10 MBps, and read at maybe 15. And yes, there is a theoretical number of writes per "cell" (a cell usually being 8 kb) before it fails, though that number is pretty high - you would need to re-write your entire card 24/7 for about 4 years before it was unusable (being more than 10% cell failure rate). I'm really not looking for any speed jump, I'm mainly looking for a cheap way to get an 8GB drive into the FIVE Fujitsu 3500 Tablet PCs I have sitting here. I need to sell some of them and I am not having luck finding cheap 2.5" drives. I figure this could be a semi-cheap way to do it. If I got a speed boost or got to say "yes, it has a solid state drive" I might be able to sell them easier. I just didn't want a decrease in performance. |
