Well I haven't taken it fully apart but there is to visible signs that the
spring broke and what's left of the valve stem appears the be held in firmly by
the keeper. it spins easily but wont pull out.

Are you sure that the valve spring or the keeper didn't give up first and let
the valve drop into the cylinder ?

    Subject: broken valve.

Anybody ever have an exhaust valve just break? see attached pictures. this
was my backup motor, stock 95 bottom end with stock 99 head. When it failed at
the track my initial thought was something wigged out with fuel control and it
went lean and burnt a piston, even though I had run it in 5 prior 20 minute
sessions and watched wideband readings and wasn't recording knock, but looking
at this now it looks more like the valve just broke and pummeled everything. I
had switched from the 2L which was consuming Oil and didn't really spend a lot
of time re tuning. I just turned down master fuel and it actually didn't seem
that bad other than it felt like it was making a good amount of power at 17psi.
judging by my lap times and strait speed it had to have been around 300hp to
the rear wheels.

This took out the GT3071R turbo with it. chunks of piston turned into
molten aluminum in the turbine housing and destroyed the turbine wheel as well.
