That doesn't make sense: if the engine's already a little knackered, why waste
the time to gouge the cam?  Seems far more likely that something else happened,
hence my concern.

Then again, I'm known for Burgessing to the nth degree (it took me the better
part of 4 days to splice in a silly O2 sensor, for example), so take that
concern with a grain of salt.

The best guess that I could come up with is:

The water pump developed a leak (rusty stains all over the engine especially
around the pump). They replaced some hoses, timing belt, and cam seals
(probably some other stuff too). They gouged the hell out of the cam shaft and
buttoned the car up for a quick sale. My girl bought the car without checking
it out and that is how I got it (no oil, leaky seal, rusty stains).

What about the rest of the engine?  If the cam's got a big chunk of metal out
of it, where did it go and what did it hit?

I pulled the cam today and it was pretty eaten up. Big chunk out of it and it
looks like they left a little metal in there so it ate up some rings
around the shaft as well. I was going to clean it up anyway for the heck of it
but it looks like too much damage. Found one at "The Parts Group" for $58
shipped so I should be back in business in a few days...

The key to getting it to stick properly is to get the metal surface
REALLY CLEAN.
