It is in the block at the deck surface. There is a pic on the FM site
somewhere. If you left it out there was be a massive oil pressure drop. If
you have reasonable pressure then it is there.

Where is the Head restrictor? Is it built in the head gasket?

Sorry for dumb question, but I have struggled with low oil pressure on a couple
Miata’s.

Thank you,

Jamie-

low oil pressure comes primarily from 3 things. bad sensor/gauge, clearances
too high somewhere or weak pressure relief spring.

items to verify: Check with a real gauge to validate. New oil pump or
aftermarket "rebuilt"? there isn't really too much to rebuild on pumps so
aftermarket usually just clean them. A real rebuilt pump would have the
housing decked to .003-.004", the relief plunger hole checked for scoring and
the relief spring checked for spec. Also check you reinstalled the head
restrictor and torqued the cam caps down.

If all checks out then add a couple of washers to the bottom of the relief
spring to raise the pressure. If that doesn't work then the relief plunger may
be stuck open.

I chased low oil pressure for 3 years, tearing the engine apart twice, and it
ultimately turned out to be the gauge in the dash.

Pressure should be 30 at idle and 60 psi at speed.

Just rebuilt a 95 1.8 and we are getting what seems to be low oil pressure. At
least to bottom end of the spec in the manual. Bearing clearances measure good,
and has a new oil pump. I was wondering if anyone with a manual (real) oil
pressure gauge typically gets at 3,4,5,6K. Also any ideas what would make the
pressure low. Thanks in advance.
