Battery is in the trunk with no ventilation and your charging it so yea it's 
going to be hot.

14.4 volts shouldn't be a problem charging.

I believe 14.4 is fine.  The gell cells take a little more voltage than lead 
acid so 14.4 is spec. Shouldn't be a problem.
Lastest and not so greatest.........my alternator seems to be over charging. I 
have made it 650 miles into an 800 mile leg. I am going to sit for a bit to let 
it cool off. The battery is an Optima Red Top.
