I hate to tell you this, but your RedTop is on its last legs. :-(

My RedTop did the same thing this Spring ... It just kept getting hotter
and hotter the longer you drive ... and then it started developing a
sulphuric smell, at first I could've sworn my catalytic converter had
died, but then for whatever reason when I went to open my trunk I
noticed the smell was coming from there, and the battery was making a
fizzing sound.

I immediately unhooked the battery and pulled it out. Called Optima the
next business day and they had me do a couple of tests, as soon as the
battery started fizzing and heating up again, they said "yup, its no
good" ... luckily it was within the 3yrs, so I got a free replacement,
but this time I paid the extra $10 and upgraded to a Yellow Top that fit
much better into my '02, and now I know if the YellowTop deep cycles on
me, it can handle it!

Thanks,
Thuwa

How hot is hot to you??

Battery is in the trunk with no ventilation and your charging it so yea
it's going to be hot.

14.4 volts shouldn't be a problem charging.

I believe 14.4 is fine. The gell cells take a little more voltage than
lead acid so 14.4 is spec. Shouldn't be a problem.
Lastest and not so greatest.........my alternator seems to be over
charging. I have made it 650 miles into an 800 mile leg. I am going to
sit for a bit to let it cool off. The battery is an Optima Red Top.
